Sunset subverts the iconic image of the sun sinking into the horizon by freezing its disappearance and rendering it visible at 360 degrees. It provokes new relations within the urban environment, while reflecting on the passage of time and our contemporary image production.
Sunset in Amsterdam is presented by NDSM as part of (Un)monumenting, a program questioning the monumental nature of the site. The Nederlandsche Dok en Scheepsbouw Maatschappij (NDSM) was a shipyard for ship building, repair, and mechanical engineering in Northern Amsterdam. The shipyard existed between 1894 and 1979 and grew into the largest shipyard in the Netherlands during that time. In 2009 NDSM received a national monument status, and the Stichting NDSM-werf was founded to safeguard cultural accessibility to the area. The invited artists of (Un)monumenting explore what the specific character of the place means and could mean in the future to a city and its inhabitants.
Visit from January 16th to Feb 16th, 2025, from Thursdays to Sundays, between 17:30 and 23:00.
